Our planet is home to an estimated 10 million species (excluding microbes)! Every species is part of an interconnected web of life. In this workshop, we’ll discover some of the incredible plants and creatures we share Earth with. We’ll look at the interconnectedness of life, and how each element of an ecosystem influences another.
This workshop will foster a sense of wonder at the natural world among students. What we also know is that due to human activity, Earth is undergoing its sixth mass extinction (the dinosaurs being the fifth!). We’ll explore the threats facing life on our planet – from habitat loss to overexploitation to climate change. Alongside learning just how special and precarious the natural world is, students will also discover what they can do to preserve it. Let’s fix our future!
BIG QUESTIONS
How do humans interact with the natural world?
What can I do to make a difference?
In which ways are we harming the natural world?
What can you do to fix our future?
WORKSHOP ACTIVITIES
Mapping human impact: are even the most remote ecosystems free from human activity? Can humans have a positive impact?
Ecosystem jenga: what happens when species aren’t there to hold ecosystems together?
Debating activity: how might different stakeholders approach conservation? From the perspective of a farmer, scientist, or perhaps business developer, you’ll argue about the best way to go about protecting nature before reflecting on how real-world decisions are made.
Designing vision boards: imagining what a sustainable future looks like to you, and working backwards to find the steps you can take to get there.
Pledge task: what can you do in your own life to protect life on Earth?
Our workshops are backed by leading climate and education scientists, and are just the right blend of inspiration, information and interaction. Students who have taken part in our workshops have gone on to start their own initiatives, fundraising events and volunteering positions.
Everyone has a part to play in climate action, so it’s important to us that our workshops are accessible to everyone. We’re adapting our workshops for SEND schools, and working with our Youth Advisory Group to ensure that our activities reflect the needs of all young people. Workshops are fully funded for state schools and most youth groups, and are designed for KS3-KS5.
