This week, Gemma has been in Wigan, at the county’s best attended Youth Climate Summit to date. That’s 300 students and their teachers, tickets sold out.
The summit is a celebration of climate and nature action, culminating in the local councellor, Lee McStein, taking the best ideas forward from the day to try and make them happen in Wigan – a brilliant example of giving young people agency over their future and a chance to use their voice and connect with politics.
We were there to run a taster session of our Green Careers workshop. This workshop centres around the idea that no matter what your dream career, there’s a way to use it to benefit the planet. We’re talking passive house architects, world-building video game designers, sustainable fashion buyers…
If you’ve been following our comms for a while, I’m sure you’ve seen some footage of the giant version of the board game in action (if not, you can enjoy that here). Due to logistical reasons, Gemma had to stick with the classroom size version for this event, but it went down like a storm.
Glowing feedback for our Green Careers board game from young climate summit attendees!
“I discovered new possibilities.”
“It made learning fun.”
“I learned more by talking to others.”
“It’s a really inclusive way of engaging people.”
“The game board is fun!”
“It showed me a wide range of career paths.”
It was wonderful to see students connect so well with a game which the youth engagement team and designer Tom have poured so much love and effort into creating. Gemma also reflected on engagement she saw with our biodiversity Jenga, remembering how one student in particular was incredibly invested in the drama of removing species from our theoretical ecosystem. It goes to show that making climate education fun really does make a meaningful impact – our whole philosophy, actually!
